Lismore Show 2013 Saturday.

Had a few hours to kill so rocked up to the show to take a few photos .  All went great , got a few pics and met a few extremely talented  people until I tried to take a photo of an Alpacas  eye  that was  in a little arena .   WRONG  MOVE HOLTY ,  a "lovely lady "  assured me in her very dulcet tone voice  ( gravel ) that  because there are kids there NO CAMERAS of ANY DESCRIPTION  blah , blah .    If this is the way the world is heading  I'm glad I'm and old fart  and didnt have to put up with any of that shit when I was a kid growing up . We would have breakfast and piss off for the day with Mum saying  " make sure your home before dark and don't muck up ! "   "YES Mum "  ..

At least I can still take photos of COWS , BULLS and DOGS !!!!!!  :)

Update from a  photographer friend  :  Parents and grandparents could NOT even take photos of their OWN kids !

NRCMCC RALLY 2013 Friday and Saturday Photos

NOTE added Sunday.   A guy got cleaned up yesterday morning on his way to the Saturday ride. I'm only hearing it 3rd hand but having been there on 3 occasions  in the last 6 years be VERY ,VERY   CAREFUL when overtaking a farmer on a tractor  ANYWHERE .

Friday is my day , I get to play around photographing the "older" bikes  and then play around trying to  make the photos  look last century .     As usual the photos  are on Photobucket  HERE .

I have also added a photo only page on Facebook  recently that may make it easier for people to find all photos or at least point them in the right direction .Just type in Holtys Photos  in the search bar or click on the link  . If  you are  not a Facebook fan  ,  just  type  holty1352  in any browser search engine ...

Chasing the Origin of My Middle Name. VINE

John Vine Holt  1 , 2 and 3

Taken off the users website on Rootsmagic 6       Holty1352 Genealogy

I tried about 6 or 7 years ago and now I will try again  . I can trace Mums side back for "forever" because they were crooks , coppers , land barons , some all three but  for the "man of the woods"  ! :)    I hope someone out there knows of some LEADS .

Thanks  Holty...

As usual I'm playing with my brain and AGAIN trying to find the origin of my middle name , Vine . I have hit the brick wall at John Hoult married to an Ann Vine in Loughborough so if anyone can help .

They lived at No 22 Pinfold Gate Loughborough in Leicestershire at the 1851 census .The ages listed v names confirms . It seems John Jnr and his wife Eliza (from London) where living with Mum and Dad prior to their emigration to AU in 1852 (see above). Other members of the house where Eliza (1835-) , Hugo(1837-), James (1832-) ,Samuel Walter (about 1828) and William (1827-). Both Johns where labourers and the girls including mother worked in the cotton mills. I have cross ref this with a later census and found John Sr and ANN in their 70s still living at the same address without kids ! and still working . John is now a gardener after being a Sexton as well (Hmmm?)

Two of the kids stayed close by living in Sparrow Hill and Baxter Gate with Hugo being around in the 1891/1901 census married to another Ann, (Elizabeth) with heaps of kids including a daughter Eliza (another one) still living at home at 39 years , a brother James also at home at 30 and Sarah 25 as well .Very unusual for 3 of the 4 eldest to still be at home . They appear in the 1881 and 1891 census as well and looks like they never left home or married ? WHY

William who was born in Stanford ( the only child that was) married another ANN from Hathern and where living in Sparrow Hill in 1861 but then"disappear" until 1891 census living in 8 Albert Court aged 64 and 51 looking after their "nephew Joseph Black aged 13 ".

Yes there at least 3 Ann Hoults living within a few 100 yards of each other in the mid to late 1800s. I can understand why people get lost or deviate with written records if you don't stay focused .It would be much easier if I could access these original census and parish records myself.

And a bit of fun .........

The Clarence Valley Historic & Enthusiasts Motorcycle Club Rally 2013

Now say that   title   half pissed ! :)

Col asked me to go down there to get a few photos and I'm glad I did .  Not only did I bump into some famous ( or infamous people ) I haven't seen in almost 35 years  it was a great day . The weather was excellent , a great range of bikes and owners  and a great route giving me options for  another attempt at "panning" . It wont beat me .    See you again next year , and thank you to the 20 or 30 people that  came up and said hello with a smile , a very pleasant change .
About 40 or so photos on Photobucket here   Grafton 2013 Rally Photos  , feel free to copy what you want  and remember to enlarge to " view original " first    . . They are in time line order and haven't been edited as such  , just cropped  so you may have to "play" to suite  your monitors .

Aussie Triples Motorbike Rally 2013 BALLINA NSW

I went out yesterday to look at the Aussie British Triples Rally  and experimented with new camera settings for panning ( My Achilles heal )  Bad move Holty... I will sneak back today and try again.
Maybe I'm trying for the impossible but no pain , no gain .:)

As usual there are some truly beautiful bikes and the even more usual stories of how and why .  If you weren't part of bikes in the 60 and early 70s  you may not understand but this is the era that the British motorcycle industry  became almost extinct ..   The red Legend  gets my "peoples choice"  and I will always have a soft spot for a Hurricane , almost  Holty . I got a BMW instead . :)

Million Paws Walk 2013 The Gold Coast

I took the cameras up to  the  Gold Coast    yesterday for the Million Paws Walk at  Broadwater Parklands on Marine Parade, Southport   to photograph some of the antics of the dogs and their owners on this special day.
My brief was to get photos of dogs and owners you would not normally see,and if possible some of owners that look like their dogs . :)  It was a great morning with perfect weather and my best "guesstimate"  was well over 1000 dogs .  I'm like my old man with animals usually come before people  and I can honestly say the vibes around there yesterday were exceptional  .  Not the slightest hint of agro from either dogs or owners considering they came in all ages , shapes and sizes .  ( Yes , BOTH  ) .

Well done to all the volunteers that must have put in many 100s of hours to make this even happen .

When I get time I will put 30 or 40 photos on my Photobucket  site and as usual feel free to copy any you wish but you will need to post edit to suit your monitors .

Oregon Scientific WMR200A Weather Station

 2nd April .
  • Added another 2  with the original batteries to see what happens . Now have 8 running .
  • Put the weather station info on Weather Underground  and if you are interested to see the local weather conditions for Broadwater Northern Rivers NSW    click  on the link below  .
  •   Broadwater New South Wales Weather
  • Why wunderground , I tried the rest and it suits me "eye" the best.  Each to their own . It usually is updated every 15 minutes when I am on line and I use the "catch up" function in Cumulus when it isn't .

2nd March . Added the 3 new sensors with no problems at all  and since the 2nd of Feb  the gear has  survived winds up to 85 klm and rain fall rates of just under 150 ml an hour . YEP.   The Cumulus software is performing as expected  and now it is all too easy . The guy that maintains it needs a medal . If he ever reads this I hope he gets a laugh . :)

2nd Feb .   It survived last weeks weather  and  when I could get outside I checked its sensor readings against a hand held  device I own ...
  •  The anemometer reading  was  slightly low  but at winds of 40 to 60 km per hour  I was having a problem standing .
  •  The rain gauge did the opposite , its readings were slightly high but in the same winds .
  •  One of the remote Temp / Humidity sensors reads about 2 degrees high so I just adjusted the alarm to suit
  • I have 2 more TRG810s  on order and  two UVN800 remote UV sensors  as well . Why 2 UV's ?   So I can compare to see if they are as bad as a lot of reviews claim ..  Only my opinion but you seldom see a forum  called  "  Happy Customer "  .

I have been looking for a "small" RF weather station for a while and decided on the WMR200A . Yes I have read a LOT of negative reviews about this product  but have also read some where they have lasted years and get 5 stars  . You figure ?   Anyway my brief was and still is on an ongoing basis that I need something that would cover an acre and have up to 9 remote ( and moveable )  RF Temp / Humidity sensors . I currently have 4 operating .   Yes I looked at the Davis gear  ( it looks great ) then  started adding up the costs of what I needed and  the decision became obvious.

While I was waiting for the gear to arrive   ( from Hong Kong )  even though the site had an AU address  I started down loading  every software program I could find as the supplied software is basically not what I wanted ( read useless) .  Bottom line I have deleted all but one , Cumulus will stay and seems to meet most if not all of my needs at present ( The kiss principle ) . I have visually  modified it to suit my old eyes and love the way the addition sensor information updates on the fly on the main screen.

Initial Setup..

  •  READ ALL instructions BEFORE opening anything . Yes I know , anal ..
  • Opened  and connected all the components including putting  in new Lithium batteries  NOT the cheapies supplied.
  • Fitted a "dummie" pole on a trolley so I could wheel it around to make sure of the correct final location .
  • Took the 4 remote sensors to the worst location and left them there for 24 hours to see if they varied in signal reception , they didn't .
  • The next day was spent "tweaking " settings as the sensors  had to be put in very specific locations and to my surprise  after a few resets  ALL communicated with the base station in a matter of a few minutes .

To Date ..
  • Even though I come from this bloodline J V Holt & Co  and cant even wire a 240 volt power point I found it very basic and straight forward to set it all up  . READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ..
  • It is all working  to date with 40 C plus days to today when it looks like 200mm of rain is coming down the coast
  • Sensor 10 (the most extreme location)  used to drop out until I moved the PC , monitor and power supplies as far away from the base station as I could (see photos) . Also "foiled" the aerial as suggested in a forum . This seems to have sorted it .
  •  Replaced the plastic poles with a 3 m  50 mm galvanished pipe driven 900mm   into the ground and concreted . I can modify as and when needed if I want to go higher .
  • Added a standard 150mm rain gauge as a backup  to compare  (see photos)

Summary ..

Time will tell if this gear is rubbish  but to my logic  even if I have to replace some of the sensors or all for that matter   I cant justify spending the huge amount of money on Davis gear.  Just price 9 of their remote RF Temp / Humidity sensors  .   Maybe if I win Lotto ...

Like I said I may one day have to eat my words.

Holty..

PS , you can watch it here if you wish   .   Holtys Weather Station

The pole can extend up to at least twice its current height
JIT . Its pissing down and tonight looks like 200 mm .

I had to make new shelves to get the power supplies as far away from the base as possible.

I will make up perspex boxes  later  but this is a good test . :)

Ballina to Lismore Toy Run 2012

Check the look on the kids face :)

Just back from taking a few photos of the Ballina to Lismore Toy Run  . I have never been before but will be there next year as it seems to be bike people getting together  for all the right reasons . It didn't seem to matter what you rode as long as you turned up , had a laugh , donated a few bob and didn't cause anyone grief ...

This is the  link to  40  unedited photos on Photo bucket  and pinch them if you wish ...

Just picked up a Toyota Hilux Workmate  so now need to sell the Triton .  While it has done heaps of K it has had a very sheltered life from day one by the log books . All I have ever put in it is the dogs , my golf clubs and a few trips to the tip so nothing seems to have changed over its life .
